De vida vagabunda y personalidad de visionario, siempre acompañado de la locura, cuyo patetismo dio fama a Hölderlin o Nietzsche.
Sus "Cantos órficos" aparecen por primera vez en 1914, vendidos por el propio autor en los cafés, para cubrir su subsistencia, poco antes de ser internado definitivamente.
Todas sus obras se publicaron póstumamente: "Inéditos", 1942; "Cuaderno", 1949; "Cantos órficos y otros escritos", 1952; "Cartas", 1958 y "Pequeño cuaderno de Faenza", en 1960
